Taro cakes are typically round, sometimes decorated with sesame seeds, and are usually golden or brownish-yellow in color. The interior is filled with a smooth, soft taro paste filling with a rich taro aroma. Main ingredients include taro, sugar, glutinous rice flour, butter or cooking oil, and some recipes add purple sweet potato powder for color. Unlike other taro cakes, taro cakes have a crispy biscuit crust instead of a soft dough made from wheat flour. Variations also exist where the crust is made directly from scallion pancakes or glutinous rice flour.
